> The Things You Can Read: April 2014

The Things You Can Read welcomes you and thanks you for your readership. We, here at The Things You Can Read, ask your help, if you visit our site regularly, please follow us either via email or Google Friend Connect.  Launched on June 7, 2012, our site has already attracted a great deal of attention.  One of the goals of the site is to feature reviews of Children's Picture Books, Young Adult novels and Adult Literary Fiction/Nonfiction.  A second goal for the blog is to be a resource for teachers of English and writing--with examples of student created writing, writing tips, resource links, and the opportunity to pick the brain of a seasoned English teacher.  To spice things up...every now and then, we'll also include random quotes and thoughts on education and life in general, but our ultimate goal is to reach out into the blogosphere and be a "Book Whisperer" and "Writing Whisperer" to children and adults of all ages.   Thank you for your readership.  Here is to a lifetime filled with reading and writing.

Review: Incendiary Girls: Stories by Kodi Scheer TLC Book Tour

Incendiary Girls by Kodi Scheer is a collection of short stories, however, these are not your average short stories. Each one has elements that are fantastical and unsettling with a story line that is depicted in detailed. In other words, this is a nontraditional and surreal collection that is based in realism or should I say magical realism.  If you like the work of Gabriel Garcia Marquez then Incendiary Girls should be right up your alley.

The first story in the collection is entitled "Fundamental Laws of Nature" and boy does it start off with a bang "Ellen is convinced her daughter's lesson horse is the reincarnation of her mother.  The horse's eyes give her away.  And her mother always loved anything equine.  Fitting that she's now a black thoroughbred mare."  Wow, you know starting off like this that things can only get weirder, and they do  This is just one of the many unusual circumstances Ms. Scheer creates.  I'm a big fan of the short story genre and this debut collection is one that you simply can't put down because the author's  mature command over each and every tale makes each one a delight to read.

I'd like to thank TLC Book Tours, New Harvest Publishing, and the author, Kodi Scheer for the opportunity to review this book.

April is Poetry Month!

Happy Poetry Month!
“Amen” by James Baldwin

No, I don’t feel death coming.
I feel death going:
having thrown up his hands,
for the moment.
I feel like I know him
better than I did.
Those arms held me,
for a while,
and, when we meet again,
there will be that secret knowledge
between us.

Favorite Lines from Movies BASED on Books

Is there a line from a movie based on a book that you really wish had been in the book? Well, here is mine from The Wizard of Oz.:

Dorothy: How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?

Scarecrow: I don't know, but some people without brains do an awful lot of talking, don't they?

Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

Let us know your favorite line here at The Things You Can Read!

We're Back! Cozy Up with a Good Book!

Sorry we have been away from our beloved blog for a few weeks.  A month long hospitalization placed us in the out of commission column.  We are in recovery mode now and have a new son to show for it. Harrison Harper joined our family and now it's back to work...

Here is our latest book related find that we can't wait to try out, and we'd like to thank Out of Print for making us aware of this fantastic idea.  What do you do with all those book related tees when they are out of commission?  Make a cozy quilt to wrap up in while reading.  You don't sew, so how will you do this?  Well, create your very own cozy quilt to read under by sending those discarded tees off to Project REPAT. Take a peek and see what you think of this idea.

Is this something you'd be interested in?  Let us know here at The Things You Can Read.
