The Things You Can Read welcomes you and thanks you for your readership. We, here at The Things You Can Read, ask your help, if you visit our site regularly, please follow us either via email or Google Friend Connect.  Launched on June 7, 2012, our site has already attracted a great deal of attention.  One of the goals of the site is to feature reviews of Children's Picture Books, Young Adult novels and Adult Literary Fiction/Nonfiction.  A second goal for the blog is to be a resource for teachers of English and writing--with examples of student created writing, writing tips, resource links, and the opportunity to pick the brain of a seasoned English teacher.  To spice things up...every now and then, we'll also include random quotes and thoughts on education and life in general, but our ultimate goal is to reach out into the blogosphere and be a "Book Whisperer" and "Writing Whisperer" to children and adults of all ages.   Thank you for your readership.  Here is to a lifetime filled with reading and writing.

Top Ten Tuesday: August 6, 2013

Top Ten Tuesday

The question for August 6, 2013 for Top Ten Tuesday is Books I Wish Could Have Had Sequels I have thought about this one for a number of days, and finally decided that books are like movies, often the sequel is never as good.  With that said, I'd rather remember the really good first book then remember the not so good sequels that came after.  So, I don't have a list of books for this one.  How would you have answered this one?  Let us know here at The Things You Can Read!

15 Day Book Blogger Challenge: Day 15

Day 15:  Who are your book blogging mentors?

Mentors?  Well, I don't have a one-on-one relationship with an experienced blogger, but I do have blogs which I think do it right, and visit almost daily.  As I said in an earlier post on the challenge, one of my blogging goals this, my second year of blogging, is to find some of that mentoring love out there in the blogosphere.  So, here are my go-to blogs and why:

I've got egg on my face, after writing the above paragraph a day ago, I woke up in the middle of the night and realized I do have a mentor! First off, I have to apologize to Alexis over at Alexis @ Reflections of a Bookaholic because it actually took me a day to realize my big boo boo.  Back when I first started blogging and it felt like no one even knew by blog existed Alexis was leaving comments. She gave me a big boost to my blogging ego when it was most needed. So, yes, I do have a mentor and it would be Alexis over at Reflections of a Bookaholic. Thanks Alexis. I knew when I wrote this post I'd forgotten something!

So, here are my go-to blogs and why:
Reflections of a Bookaholic-Adult Fiction, Great Reviews, and Commenter Extraordinaire
Leeswammes' Blog Adult Fiction, Great Reviews, Challenges, Hops
Film English Writing Ideas and use of shorts
Roof Beam Reader Adult Fiction, Great Reviews, Challenges, Read-Alongs
Book'd Out Adult Fiction, Reviews
Silver's Reviews Adult Fiction, Reviews
Unabridged Chick Adult Fiction, Reviews
Rose City Reader Adult Fiction, Reviews, Challenges, Hops
Nerdy Book Club Random Thoughts on Children's Literature

I'm sure I'll think of a few more, but these came to mind immediately!  Like I said earlier, personal relationships with folks out in the blogosphere is a priority this year!

Happy reading to all! ☮

15 Day Book Blogger Challenge: Day 9

Day 9:  Why do you blog about books?

Why do I blog about books?  Well, because I've always loved a good story.  As a child it was fairy tales.  I was lucky enough to have a mother who took me to the library and read to me, and she, in turn, passed on her love of reading to me.  Where did she learn to love books?  She learned from having her mother read fairy tales and Bible stories to her.  Like all family traditions, I hope to pass on my passion for reading to my almost three year-old twins, Samuel and Irene, and their almost two year old sister, Lillian Marcella.  I read to them, and they see me read, which makes them interested in the printed word.  Books and old movies are my passion.  I don't have time for movies any more, and I can't imagine giving up books, so I read and blog about what I know best, BOOKS.

"Are you the art teacher?" That's the question I get all the time. No, I'm not the art teacher, but I am a frustrated artist trapped inside the body of an English teacher, and my blog also allows me to express myself visually.  So by day, I'm an English teacher who spreads her passion for reading to her students, where I often use my visual extension of myself, my blog, in my lesson, which is why during the school year, I have more teacher oriented posts mixed into the bunch.  Like my blog says, I want to be a "Book Whisperer" to those who find me in the classroom or out in the blogosphere, therefore, I blog!  Happy reading to all! ☮

15 Day Book Blogger Challenge: Day 7

Day 7:  Talk about your blogging quirks.

Well, I hadn't really thought of them as quirks, but I guess they are quirky habits I've established over my year of blogging.  I save lots of what I call "Possible Future Posts" in the draft folder of my blogging template.  To give you an idea, I have 700 drafts in my folder right now.  In comparison, I have only 330 published posts (remember I've only been blogging for a year).  Now these might be simply a quick fragment of an idea or an article that I found, which will ultimately lead to a germ for a future posts or they might be partially written posts.

Recently, I've developed another habit of making sure I have scheduled at least five posts to automatically post over the upcoming five days.  Right now, I have seven scheduled to post, which is great because next week I am very busy as a helper/teacher with VBS plus all my children's other summer activities.  This is also a really good quirk to have established because we will be going on vacation in a few weeks, and I don't have access to the Internet during that time.  In connection with this quirk is another little thing about these five or so posts-of these posts-I like to have at least one or two reviews in the mix.

I never write on paper first.  I always type my posts.  I don't care if it is in Word or in the template of the blogging post, I type.  I learned early on that I am a far better writer when I type.  In relation to the actual writing, if I am typing a review, I like to have the image of the book posted first then I write the written word that goes along with the post.

During the day, I check my blog, at various and sundry times, to see where folks are visiting my blog from and what material they are viewing.  This helps me plan content for my blog as I begin writing those scheduled posts.

One of my blogging goals for the year is to develop more blogging friendships, so I have seen another quirk develop, and that is to make sure to [TRY] and reply to any comments I receive on my blog, and to try to leave comments on blogs I visit.  This is sometimes harder than you'd think it would be because of the time this takes.

My last thoughts on the subject of blogging quirks are in relation to returning to a post.  I will often go back to posts and edit or add information if I think it should be modified.  Especially, now, with the five day ahead scheduling system, I can let a post sit a few days and then read over it with "fresh eyes" to catch basic grammar mistakes or even add a thing or two to the post.

Well. these are my blogging quirks or preferences, I'm sure I'll be coming back to add a few that I think of later, but in the mean time, what are your blogging quirks?

15 Day Book Blogger Challenge: Day 6

Day 6: How do you shop for books.

I shop for books many different ways.  One way is to watch what books my FRIENDS on Goodreads are adding to their TBR pile.  I have several folks who I know have similar reading tastes and I trust their judgment.  I also belong to several Goodreads group, and I watch what books crop up in the conversations within the group.  I also subscribe by email to several blogs and other Bookie related resources, which continually mention "new to me' books.  I keep a master running list on my Goodreads profile.  I use reviews on Goodreads, Amazon, and on various and sundry blogs to research whether or not I think a book is for me.  I often am able to acquire new "soon to be released" books from the publisher in return for a review, but if I have to purchase the book, I will first use the sample feature on Amazon to decide if I will put "real money" on the line to buy the book or not.

Once upon a time, I used to go to a wonderful bookstore in Richmond called Black Swan Books, but that was pre-children.  The nearest Barnes & Noble is forty minutes away, so regular visits are not feasible.  However, we do have A Books A Million nearby, but I've never been a big fan.

Now, most of my paltry purchases are online.  Once the children are old enough, I hope to return to visiting my favorite antiquarian bookstore, Black Swan, but that is still a few years off.  I also use my library's Overdrive system to checkout Audiobooks and Ebooks.  Not having to physically return the books you checkout electronically is one of the best technological inventions since sliced bread.

That's how I shop for books  How do you shop for your book purchases.  Let us know here at The Things You Can Read.

Book Beginnings on Friday: Response

This is my first time participating in Book Beginnings on Friday.  Here is what you are asked to do:

Please join me every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author's name.-Rose City Reader

Whistling Past the Graveyard

"My grandmother said she prays for me every day."-Whistling Past the Graveyard by Susan Crandall

I was drawn to read this book by the comparison many have made between Whistling Past the Graveyard and the classic, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.  They both have young pre-teen southern narrators, but Whistling Past the Graveyard is not another To Kill a Mockingbird, in my opinion.  With that said, it is a very good read, and I am enjoying it.

Book Blogger Hop: Question of the Week July 12-18, 2013

How long have you been blogging?

The Things You Can Read was born on June 7, 2012, so I've been blogging regularly a smidge over a year, thirteen months to be exact.  I started the blog for many reason, but in the process, I've learned a great deal about myself.  Blogging has also made my reading more meaningful to me personally, and I hope more powerful because I can advocate for some of the great books I read to a much larger audience.  Neither of these two things were why I started blogging originally, but were both side-effects, if you will, of starting The Things You Can Read.  I have become a bit obsessive over my blog and treat it very, very seriously.  Now, if I could only make blogging  my real money-making job, I'd be a very happy person.

If you blog, how long have you been blogging?  If you don't blog, why not?  Let us know here at The Things You Can Read

15 Day Book Blogger Challenge: Day 5

Day 5:  Recommend a tear jerker.

I respond emotionally to books all the time, but rarely do I cry. More often then naught, I laugh out loud. However, with that said, there is one book I read back in the 90s, which did make me cry buckets. I cried because issues in the book related to me on a very personal level. I cried many, many times reading this book. At the time, I cried most for the Love that is shared by the couple in the book because it is a love, I knew, I did not have in my own life. I read the book in one night, after finishing, I continued to cry. The next day, I woke up with a big old swollen face and puffy eyes. What book made me react so emotionally? The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks. It is the only Nicholas Spark book I have ever read. The book simultaneously struck many emotional cords, I still can see myself, in my minds-eye, laying on the sofa downstairs reading and crying, not just crying, but heaving big old snot sobs is more like it. I know if I read the book today it would not cause the same reaction. My life is so different now, and I did find the love I longed for, but at the time, all the stars aligned in just the right way to create this once in a lifetime reaction.

15 Day Book Blogger Challenge: Day 4

Day 4: What's the last book you flung across the room?

If I am going to read a book it is going to be a good one.  Honestly, I don't have time to read a bad one with three children under three running around, my reading time is precious.  Here is what I do, I will give a book between 50 to 100 pages, and if I'm not "feel'in the love," I don't continue.  There has to be something I feel really needs to be shared for me to spend the time to even write a less than positive review.  My feeling is, if I spend the time writing a review it is because I am giving it my seal of approval, and want to help build an audience for the book.

I will say, I did stop reading a recently published "high profile" book.  It came to the top of my TBR pile with some major hype, but the story and the characters were not for me.  The main characters were three grown siblings who are brought together by a family tragedy.  I not only did I try reading this one, but listening to it, as well.  I dreaded doing either.  You know if you dread reading, STOP, like I said earlier, "So many good books, so little time."

I recently read a classic where the writing was stunning, but the subject matter was revolting: pedophilia dressed up in a pretty package.  I desperately wanted to like the book, but because of the subject matter, it, instead, revolted me; yes, I could have easily thrown it across the room were it not for the fact it was an ebook.

I will refrain from naming any specific books because how one feels about a book can be very subjective, and  honestly, I don't want to taint someone's opinion, and thereby prevent them from reading a book they may really like.  I will say, I do research a book before I start reading it.  I don't just randomly start a novel, which I also think can prevent any flinging!

15 Day Book Blogger Challenge: Day 3

Day 3: Who are your blogging BFFs.

The Things You Can Read was born on June 7, 2012, and for the first year of its life, I have been very busy building my blog.  I believed in the Field of Dreams philosophy, "If you build it, he [they] will come."  My goal was to have at least five posts a week, and I did it, but in my zest to achieve this goal, I have failed to establish personal relationships like I should, so I guess my blogging goal for the second year of The Things You Can Read's life is to build relationships and find some BFFs out there in the blogosphere.  Anyone need a BFF?  Let us know here at The Things You Can Read!

15 Day Book Blogger Challenge: Day 1 and 2

I found this Book Blogging Challenge on DAY 2 of the challenge, so I'm jumping in with a catch-up post with my answers for DAY 1 and DAY 2 posted together.  Here goes...

Day 1: Make 15 book-related confessions.

1.  I'm sorry to say, I can no longer stay up all night reading a book like I did before I had children.  I'm still hurting from having tried on Sunday night.

2.  I do, rightly or wrongly, judge a book by its cover.

3.  I used to be more open about my book selection process, now I'm a researcher.  I have to have evidence that the book is worth reading because my actual reading time is precious with three children under three needing my attention.  Evidence can be something as simple as blurbs by writers I respect, or my judgment based on the summary and/or publisher.

4.  Sometimes hype does make a book jump to the top of my TBR pile, but it doesn't mean I will like it or finish it.

5.  I am a bookaholic, and I did have to do something about my problem.  I don't buy as many physical books anymore, I know that this is a controversial subject for "Book Purist", but I don't have the space.  I simply have too many books; especially now with the addition of our three precious darlings who are all under three.

6.  I love my Kindle more than I thought I would (I am a former Book Purist).  I had a Nook Color first, and found it not to be as user friendly (I know this also is a controversial subject for the Nook vs. Kindle crowd, but I did use both.  In my opinion, the Amazon Cloud is an amazing piece of technology).

7.  I wish I could write as well as my favorite authors, I know this holds me back in my own writing, because I can hear my mom saying, "If you can't do something right, don't do it at all."

8.   I often use the "What is your favorite book?" question as a "short hand" to reveal a great deal of information about a person.  Try it!  It really works.  I'm always a bit weary if they answer, "I don't read."

9.  I am a believer in, "So many books, so little time" philosophy.

10.  I also am a believer in "There are too many good books to waste your time on a bad one."  The concept of BAD being very subjective, in my opinion, it is up to the individual reader to determine.

11.  Of the physical books I do buy, they tend to be picture books for my children.  Holding a real book is important, and the pictures on the page, in my opinion, are different from pictures on a screen.

12.  One of the pluses with using an Ereader is the sampling feature on Amazon or B&N.  I have sampled many a book and then gone on to purchase it because of this feature.  I have also decided the book was not for me by using this feature.

13.  I have found that the older I get the harder it is for me to read books about certain subjects.  I'll just say the subjects themselves that I shy away from are personal.

14.  I truly believe books allow me to live vicariously through the characters of the book, ergo you can live the lives of many, many different types of folks through reading.  This experience allows one to develop empathy for folks who are different from you, and this is a good thing.  As a teacher, I try to share this belief with my students.

15.  I am always looking for that nonfiction author who can make me feel as excited about nonfiction as I have always been about fiction.  I have found some and treasure those reads.

This was so much easier than I thought it would be.  Thanks to the folks over at Good Books and Good Wine. How would you answer this question?  If you would like participate in this blogging adventure click on over to Good Books and Good Wine.  I'd also like to thank Lizzy at Dark Fiction who brought this challenge to my attention.

My first 15 for the challenge are listed above.  Here are my additional thoughts:
16.  I prefer borrowing Ebooks from the library to borrowing physical books.  I love the fact the Ebook returns itself.

Day 2:  What is your bedtime reading ritual?

Simply put, I read for a long as I can before I go to bed.  It helps that now I use an Ereader for most of my reading because I no longer find my book in tattered pieces all over the room when I come home from school and the light from the Ereader doesn't bother anyone.  Reading before I go to bed has been something I've always done.  The length of time varies depending on how tired I am.  Now, I've added reading first to my daughter before I start my reading.  It is a rare night I don't read.

How would you answer these questions?  Let us know here at The Things You Can Read.

So would you read a book just because of the hype?

Yes, I would and I have.  However, I am wise enough to realize that just because there is tons of hype, it does not necessarily mean I will like the book, nor that I will finish it!

Book Blogger Hop: June 21-27

When you are writing your reviews, do you write them as you are reading or wait until you are completely done with the book?

I write my reviews after I have finished the book, but maybe I should try writing the review while I am reading the book to see if it makes a difference.  Honestly, I had never thought to try writing the review as I read the book.  I guess the "read it first" mentality has been ingrained in me from my school days. I will say that as I am reading the book, I do highlight passages to go back to when it is time to write the review.
