The Things You Can Read welcomes you and thanks you for your readership. We, here at The Things You Can Read, ask your help, if you visit our site regularly, please follow us either via email or Google Friend Connect. Launched on June 7, 2012, our site has already attracted a great deal of attention. One of the goals of the site is to feature reviews of Children's Picture Books, Young Adult novels and Adult Literary Fiction/Nonfiction. A second goal for the blog is to be a resource for teachers of English and writing--with examples of student created writing, writing tips, resource links, and the opportunity to pick the brain of a seasoned English teacher. To spice things up...every now and then, we'll also include random quotes and thoughts on education and life in general, but our ultimate goal is to reach out into the blogosphere and be a "Book Whisperer" and "Writing Whisperer" to children and adults of all ages. Random Thoughts: Crystalized Books as ART?
Artist Alexis Arnold "created a series of crystallized books as a commentary on materiality and text," Buzzfeed reported
What do you think of this book? Well, it is a an honest to goodness book and it's now recycled ART. Then click on back over here to let us know what you think of this recycled use of books. The artist feels her work speaks about materiality, what do you think?
Arnold explains that “The Crystallized Book Series was prompted by repeatedly finding boxes of discarded books, by the onset of e-books, and by the recent disappearance of bookstores. Furthermore, I had been growing crystals on hard objects and was interested in seeing the effect of the crystal growth on malleable and absorbent objects. Conceptually, the series addresses the materiality of the book versus the text or content of the book. The crystals remove the text and transform the books into aesthetic, non-functional objects. The books, now frozen with heavy crystal growth, have become artifacts or geologic specimens imbued with the history of time, use, and nostalgia.” BuzzFeed Books

Random Thought: If You Could Meet One Living Author!
If you could meet one living author, who would it be?
If I could meet one living author, I'd like to meet Harper Lee, but only if she would talk to me about To Kill a Mockingbird, and that would be highly unlikely. So...in that case, I'd say John Irving. He writes like I can only dream of writing, and I'd love to talk "writing" with him. Three of my all time favorite John Irving books are Widow for a Year, Until I Find You, and A Prayer for Owen Meany.

Random Thought: Definition of Wabi-Sabi
I love the meaning of the Japanese word, wabi-sabi. I thought I'd share this life-altering word and look for your thoughts on embracing this concept into your reading/writing life. Let us know if wabi-sabi is a viewpoint you already embrace or will embrace in the future
Wabi-Sabi: Finding Beauty in Imperfection and Impermanence
Both an aesthetic and a worldview, it connotes a way of living that finds beauty in imperfection and accepts the natural cycle of growth and decay.

15 Day Book Blogger Challenge: Day 5
I respond emotionally to books all the time, but rarely do I cry. More often then naught, I laugh out loud. However, with that said, there is one book I read back in the 90s, which did make me cry buckets. I cried because issues in the book related to me on a very personal level. I cried many, many times reading this book. At the time, I cried most for the Love that is shared by the couple in the book because it is a love, I knew, I did not have in my own life. I read the book in one night, after finishing, I continued to cry. The next day, I woke up with a big old swollen face and puffy eyes. What book made me react so emotionally? The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks. It is the only Nicholas Spark book I have ever read. The book simultaneously struck many emotional cords, I still can see myself, in my minds-eye, laying on the sofa downstairs reading and crying, not just crying, but heaving big old snot sobs is more like it. I know if I read the book today it would not cause the same reaction. My life is so different now, and I did find the love I longed for, but at the time, all the stars aligned in just the right way to create this once in a lifetime reaction.

Just as my namesake in Cynthia Steps Out, I sure have stepped out since April 19, 2006, to be sure, I've done more than step out, I've accomplished so many things on my "LIFE" TO DO LIST I never thought I'd ever achieve. The biggest accomplishments on my now rather tattered list are my three children. A hugmonous THANK YOU to "YOU WHO CAN NOT/WILL NOT BE NAMED" for allowing me the opportunity to be free, thereby, allowing for my achievement of my biggest desire in life-Motherhood!
I thought this questions was particularly appropriate today, since it's my birthday, so Happy Birthday to ME!
