Book Beginnings on Friday: Response

This is my first time participating in Book Beginnings on Friday.  Here is what you are asked to do:

Please join me every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author's name.-Rose City Reader

Whistling Past the Graveyard

"My grandmother said she prays for me every day."-Whistling Past the Graveyard by Susan Crandall

I was drawn to read this book by the comparison many have made between Whistling Past the Graveyard and the classic, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.  They both have young pre-teen southern narrators, but Whistling Past the Graveyard is not another To Kill a Mockingbird, in my opinion.  With that said, it is a very good read, and I am enjoying it.

  1. I am a very bad judge of books by their first lines but I enjoy this activity nonetheless.

  2. That's a good beginning. It sounds sweet, but I suspect there's more going on.
