Arm Chair BEA: What Genre did We Miss?
Well, I think all major genres were covered. I guess, I would look more to the sub-genres to answer this question. For example, say the dystopian sub-genre or should I say phenomenon, which is an offshoot of the science fiction genre. I am currently teaching one of the earliest well known YA dystopian titles: The Giver by Lois Lowry, and because of the new interest in dystopian worlds my job has been so much easier. My personal favorite from this sub-genre is Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.

The Giver is my "go to" book when I take the kids to the library. I think I'm on pate 80 or so :)

This is my third or fourth time teaching the novel...before The Hunger Games my students had a hard time understanding the genre! Have you tried the others in The Giver series?
DeleteFavorite Dystopian hmm that is hard. I don't think I can choose just one since I'm a pretty big fan of the genre. Some of my favorites include, The Culling by Steven Dos Santos, V For Vendetta by Alan Moore and The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood.

DeleteI LOVE the wallpaper on your blog!!! I'm glad you brought up the sub-genre of dystopian lit - it's really big right now and one of my favorites! I'd to re-read The Giver series since the last one, Son, came out last year. I've enjoyed a lot of YA dystopian series lately: Hunger Games Divergent, Delirium, Matched, Legend, and more! My favorite adult dystopian book is The Stand by Stephen King.

We added this book to our "teaching novels" at my school, but since The Hunger Game fever is still rampant, I need to wait a bit before I try and teach this one. I also love when Stephen King enters the world of dystopia.
DeleteI hadn't equated The Giver with the new sub-genre but you're right. These novels have really flourished in the last few years, and I haven't really kept up.

The Giver is a series and has three additional novels that go along with it. It is one of Lois Lowry's best works, in my opinion. Hope you will come back and visit us again!
DeleteI love Fahrenheit 451 and 1984 and Brave New World. These all before the current faves The Hunger Games, Divergent, etc. My kids loved The Giver although I haven't read it yet.

Try The Giver I think you will like it! It is Lois Lowry's best work, in my opinion.
DeleteIve never heard of The Giver and will have to try it out. I think we read 1984 and Fahrenheti 451 in school as a kid but I don't remember much and think it's time for a reread. Divergent would be the first YA dystopian that I remember and loved it and Hunger Games. Stopping by from ABEA!
